From the Merriam-Webster online dictionary: 1ar·tic·u·late adjective \är-ˈti-kyə-lət\: able to express ideas clearly and effectively in speech or writing: clearly expressed and easily understood. As educators as we outline our course work and the unit work within a course, we strive to clearly express ourselves and strive to make our work easily understood by our students. This portion of my website is designed to do just that: articulate what and how I strive to teach.
Please find 2 units for my Cooking and Eating Well (CEW) course below. The course KUD (know, understand and do) outlines for the student the broad picture of what will be taught in the course. The know portion are specific elements of the content that student's will use to demonstrate deeper understanding. The understand portion are the deeper understandings about the content that as an educator I want students to remember 10 years from now. And finally the Do portion of the KUD are transferable skill targets; the course assessments are designed to measure these skills, and these skills are how students will demonstrate their K's and U's.
It is important to be able to articulate to students and parents course content. That is what the KUD is designed to do in a concise manner. If I think about cooking, which is something that most of us do to some extent; just like a recipe a KUD is the recipe for the course. When we read a recipe and understand at the outset what the ingredients and directions are for a desirable outcome, this should make the process more clear (articulate) and the desired end easier to attain.
